Creating Playful Cities: How Art can Transform a City into a Public Gallery

Talking about the ways she inspires artists in her native town of Fort Wayne to use their art to make spaces interesting and ultimately lead to increased tourism and enhanced economic development. Alexandra’s hope is to encourage her audience to exercise their imagination, inspire conversation, and evoke joy.”  Alexandra holds a degree in Political Science and after graduating she intended to move on to graduate school but detoured into painting. Her work reflects her playful personality, and her desire to bring positive energy into the world. Childhood illness allowed her hours to dream and draw. The experience forced her to grow up faster than her peers, and, in some ways, those lost years have greatly influenced her work. Art has been her catharsis and a means of expressing her love of life. She encourages her audience to embrace their inner child and never forget to color outside of the lines!

Talking about plastics. When we think of plastic, we tend to think of bags and straws. But the reality is that our lives are steeped in plastic – it covers our walls, wraps our buildings, corrects our vision, and fills our cavities. We will explore what drives Kapi to keep exploring the world of plastics in her art and how she balances the toll of the environment with the versatility of plastics. We will explore her upcoming entry into a Chicago Runway Trashion Show where Kapi will create a fashion from trashed plastics. We will talk about how she are going about the design of a fashion. Does the idea of this fit with reuse? What kinds of plastic intrigue her the most. What do you need to know about plastics to work with them artistically and safely.

Floating Ink: Creating Triptychs with Diluted Oil Colors

Talking about the ways Gary is combining a marbleizing technique with his oil paintings.  He first floats a thin layer of dilute oil color on water, then stirs the surface and lowers a canvas to pick up the pattern.  After several days drying canvases, he chooses a pattern that inspires him and finishes the painting with brushes.  This series of work he calls Ogle Earth for the aerial views he creates and Ogle Landscape for the traditional landscape views.

The Net Makers: Traditional Hoopnet Crafting

Show #218

Talking about a new movie by Hannah Myers Lindgren. The Net Makersis her fourth film streaming on Hoodox. In rural Southern Indiana, two men carry on the tradition of crafting hoopnets and commercially fishing in the White and Wabash Rivers. Despite the threat of invasive species, climate change impacts and the shifting dynamics of commercial fishing and social norms, Larry and Danny spend countless hours hand-tying thousands of knots to create the intricate hoopnets that have been used in the area since the Great Depression. While they take their own approaches to crafting their nets, both recognize the precarious state of this tradition, and hope that the culture of hoopnet making will be picked up by future generations before it becomes lost to time.
