daVinci Art Science Roundtable –

The Arts, Creativity, and Changing Perspective

daVinci Art Science Roundtable

The daVinci art science roundtables are a facilitated monthly series of exploratory discussions for artists and scientists to talk about the culture of their two fields and how they might collaborate more meaningfully. Ultimately, the discussions also explore how collaborations intersect with public understanding of science. The roundtables began with the basic assumptions that discussion between the artists and scientists had the potential to create new knowledge and ideas that would be of interest to the participants and eventually to the public as well. Building upon our past Roundtables on Neuroscience, the arts, and the brain we will begin our conversation with a discussion of a piece written by one of our members, Dr. Afsana Elanko on the arts, creativity, and changing perspective. Come prepared to reflect on the links between mental health and creativity. Join us for this free event on Friday, February 9, 2024 from 1pm to 2pm EST.

We have amazing eyes. What we can see with the unaided eye is only a small fraction of what is possible to see with the aid of simple devices and techniques. From simple magnifying glasses to telescopes, microscopes, special cameras, and spectroscopes we are able to greatly expand our knowledge of ourselves and of the world around us. Terroir: Nature or Voodoo?

Show #253

Talking about the French notion of terroir has no equivalent word in English and requires the grower to consider all the natural variables that affect the growing of grapes. From the early monks in the Middle Ages to today’s 21st Century growers, does terroir make a real difference in the wines or is it just viticultural voodoo, as some United States wine growers believe? We will examine the science of the soil, climate, and landscape that combine to make the character of wine. We will explore why soil and terroir are not the same while taking a journey through the history of wine making.

Leonardo DaVinci the First Skull Base Radiologist

Show #251

Talking about my guest’s special interest in head, neck, and skull base imaging including a deep interest in Leonardo DaVinci. My guest became interested as a result of a Neurosurgical article written many years ago which described DaVinci’s numerous anatomical diagrams which he created as he performed numerous anatomic dissections in his “Search for the Soul”.  He was intrigued by DaVinci’s exquisite detail which was when he realized that DaVinci was actually the first “Skull Base Radiologist”. As we become more technologically focused, physician patient care is becoming even more focused on laboratory data, electronic health records and advanced molecular, and genetic testing.  My guest became interested in looking for opportunities to encourage his colleagues to embrace art and humanity in science and patient care.
