Beauty is Pain

daVinci Art Science Roundtable

The daVinci art science roundtables are a facilitated monthly series of exploratory discussions for artists and scientists to talk about the culture of their two fields and how they might collaborate more meaningfully. Ultimately, the discussions also explore how collaborations intersect with public understanding of science. The roundtables began with the basic assumptions that discussion between the artists and scientists had the potential to create new knowledge and ideas that would be of interest to the participants and eventually to the public as well.

Artists, chambermaids, royalty, and early chemists all shared the risks of creating beauty, with little knowledge of the affects that the medium being used had upon their health and well-being. Come prepared to engage in conmversation on the links between health and the creation of beauty..

Join us for this free event on Friday, May 10, 2024 from 1pm to 2pm EST.

About the Artist: Megan Jefferson

I attended Miami University and received a BFA, with a focus in painting and have been a practicing artist for 20 years. I am a colorist with a keen interest in the beauty of nature. My paintings are ethereal, they invoke a sense of peace, wonder and stillness.

For me, inspiration comes from the light hitting the distant land, amazing flowers and flora all around us and the infinite colors in the sky.

As a painter, I am much more interested in how the experience of creating feels and the alignment of it being joyful, at ease and flowing, than I am about the outcome being a direct result of a perfect depiction of subject matter. Painting is a graceful dance that keeps me focused in the moment and allows creation to happen from a calm and centered place.

One of the beautiful things about watercolor is that is forces me to work in the moment, to consider every stroke and proceed by allowing the material to behave in its natural way. The water and colors pool, drip, merge and blend. The outcome of this essence is unpredictable, bringing the joy of surprise.

I sell my work regionally and nationally online and in local galleries.

On November 16, 2022, the Orion spacecraft launched on NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS), orbiting the Moon and returning to Earth on December 11, in the first of NASA’s Artemis missions.

For NASA’s moon landings, and for the Lunar Codex, this was a prelude: Along with other payloads, Orion carried a flash drive that included “Three Faces of the Moon” a series of poems which will be archived on the surface in a 2024 mission by the Lunar Codex.

All in all, the Lunar Codex comprises six time capsules, each launched by a different mission.
